I can't believe I missed Stephen's Birthday!!

Apparently yesterday (May 13) was Stephen's birthday. And I missed it! But luckily the good folks over at Can't Miss TV didn't! They created this great infographic all about Stephen. I've posted a few snippets below - check out the full image in all its glory over at Can't Miss TV.

Stephen starts his own cOlbert Book Club

So, Stephen has started his own "cOlbert Book Club" (modeled on his rival Oprah's "O Book Club"). First book - The Great Gatsby. Coincidence that the movie is coming out soon? I don't think so. Stephen says read the book by May 9. Then Pulitizer Prize winning author, Jennifer Eagen, will moderate the bookclub. And Baz Luhrman (director of the upcoming Great Gatsby movie) will make an appearance.

You can get the book at your favourite bookseller or library. And if you're Australian (or don't mind violating copyright law if you're NOT an Australian), you can download a plain text copy of it from the Australian Project Gutenberg site (in Australia, The Great Gatsby is out of copyright, but not in the US - for an explanation of that, read this (as well as for directions on how to get that plain text file on your ereader)).

They're using the hashtag #cOlbertbookclub on Twitter to tag the conversation.

Stephen Affirms His Tolkein Nerdaciousness

Recently there was a Live Event (why is that capitalized?) held by Peter Jackson and compatriots to give fans a first glimpse at The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (the second film in Jackson's long drawn-out Hobbit trilogy). If you purchased The Hobbit on DVD, you were given a code to access the hour-long video in which Jackson answers fan questions and teases some things about the next movie. Note: the content is still available as a sneak peak which you can access if you have a code, though it looks like it will only be available til May 24, 2013.

But for those of use who missed the movie, Jackson has posted a 6 minute video excerpt that includes Stephen Colbert! Stephen is a complete Tolkien uber-nerd and he asks Jackson a very detailed question about his portrayal of elves in his movies. I don't think it really matters if you have read Tolkien or watched Jackson's movies to enjoy this clip - it is just awesome to see Stephen geeking out!

Stephen graces the pages of Vanity Fair

In the November 2012 issue of Vanity Fair, Stephen is the focus of the "V.F. Portrait" column. Personally, I think the column, written by TV host Dick Cavett, is terrible. It's 400 words that give absolutely no new insight (or even old insight) into Stephen, his character or his process.

However, Annie Leibovitz saves the day with her amazing portrait of Stephen and his writing team.
